Want to know a little secret about restaurant LED signs?
A lot of the information you’ve heard about LED signs just isn’t true.
From dishonest manufacturers claiming their product is flawless to LED skeptics who say that digital signage doesn’t work, disinformation is rampant on both sides of the aisle.
So let’s set the record straight. Here are 5 myths about restaurant LED signs that just aren’t true, starting with…
Depending on who you ask, LED signs are either blindingly bright at night or virtually invisible during the day. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
For starters, most of the displays and traffic lights you see on your daily commute are already using LED tech. If LED technology didn’t work as well in bright conditions, why would so many people use it? And if LED lights were distracting drivers and causing accidents, wouldn’t we hear about it all the time?
Both statements are just plain false. The fact of the matter is that LED signs are highly visible during the day without being distracting at night.
Critics of LED signs seem to think that for in order for digital signage to be energy efficient, it has to use ZERO energy. It’s such an unrealistically high expectation that totally ignores the fact that LED signs use a relatively miniscule level of electricity compared to halogen or incandescent bulbs.
While plugging in your restaurant sign might not save the world, at least you don’t have to feel guilty about it.
Two opinions, two partial truths.
On the front of your restaurant signboard, you’ll notice that the individual LEDs are NOT emitting heat. Compared to an incandescent bulb—which converts more energy to heat than light—that’s pretty amazing.
LEDs, on the other hand, distribute conductive heat throughout the sign (or store it in a heat sink). That leaves the surface of your LED sign at a safe temperature, as LEDs are designed to convert a higher percentage of energy into light than more traditional light bulbs.
So, sorry—you won’t be able to cook dinner on your LED sign.
Opposite arguments, and once again the truth lies in the middle.
Opponents of LED signs say that LEDs fizzle out in just a few short years, while disreputable manufacturers claim their products can last until the sun burns out..
Restaurants LEDs made by top-quality manufacturers will last you for years, but like most things, your sign will eventually wear out. The difference between a bad supplier and a good supplier, however, could mean a decade of extra life in your investment.
For some restaurants, buying an LED sign might not be the best investment. But for many others, the upfront cost of a sign pales in comparison to the massive return on investment you can expect for the life of your signboard.
Truth be told, not every business NEEDS a top-of-the-line LED sign. Your shop might just need a small window display. The key to seeing the biggest ROI possible is choosing the right sign for your business and your advertising goals.
At the same time, don’t fall for the cheapest manufacturer. Many of the cheapest options are made in overseas factories with nonexistent quality standards—you get what you pay for.
Between most manufacturers (who promise you the world) and most critics (who promise you nothing), it can be hard to find an honest opinion on the benefit of LED signs for restaurants.
But restaurant signs aren’t dangerous. They’re not ineffective. They don’t use tons of energy. They don’t emit a lot of heat. And they aren’t ultra-expensive, niche products that only the rich can afford.
The truth is, most businesses can benefit from an LED sign. From our experience with real clients running real restaurants, choosing LED was one of the best advertising decisions they’ve ever made.
